The story of Volley Club Portorož began in 1991, in a small gymnasium of the elementary school in Lucija. We played our first matches in the third national league, in the gymnasium at the stadium in Piran. A mostly young team, with the help of a few older players, progressed quickly and, following a historic match against Prvačina, qualified for the second national league already in the 1993/94 season. In the following seasons we achieved excellent results, even a third place, and came close to the first national league. We also worked well with the younger categories, and as our greatest achievement took fifth place at the national youth championship. The club also took part several times in the Slovenian Cup competition and achieved good results there.
Beach volleyball has been our second area of activity ever since the club was founded. Here we achieved even better results in various categories. This popular Olympic sport seems tailor-made for our tourist town. With great effort, and with the understanding of the company Okolje Piran, in 1992 we built the first court on the Portorož beach and that same year organized the first national championship in independent Slovenia.
The construction of a second and third court followed, along with lighting and small stands. We organized numerous competitions at the national, international, and recreational level. Portorož rightly became the most important beach volleyball center in Slovenia.
Our male and female players reached for the highest national titles. We took part in European championships and even in the qualifications for the World Championship in Lignano. Through volunteer work we also built a court at Bernardin, which we later handed over to the Piran Sports Association. We consider the relocation of the beach volleyball courts to a new site a turning point in our history.
Credit goes to the Municipality of Piran, the company Okolje Piran and the Piran Sports Centre, who knew how to listen to our wishes and needs and, in recognition of our years of effort, built us four modern courts. Although during construction we could not rely on Slovenian experience, since no similar facility existed anywhere in Slovenia, and we had to resolve dilemmas regarding the surface, drainage, type of sand, etc. on our own, in the end we realized we had accomplished a great piece of work. The Portorož courts were built according to the prescribed FIVB and CEV standards, which makes them suitable for organizing competitions at the highest level.
The important decision in the club, namely specialization in beach volleyball, was made in 2008, with indoor volleyball serving mainly as a supplement during the winter months. Of course, our long-standing wish is to obtain an indoor hall with sand, which would enable year-round training and the conditions for top results, even an appearance at the Olympic Games.
